- Go Local. When disaster strikes you may see people come out of the woodwork to “help you out”. Find a local company that won’t steer you wrong.
- No Cash. Credit cards and checks create a paper trail that most scammers want to avoid.
- Get Multiple Bids. Don’t agree to the first thing someone offers you. Ask around to see if that price is reasonable
- Get Detailed Bids. No vagueness in the work to be done or what it should cost.
- Check References. Any upstanding contractor will be happy to refer you to the other happy customers they’ve had.
- Verify. Verify that they too are covered in case of additional problems that may or may not arise.
- Stay Looped In. Make sure that you’re aware of when and why they may contacting your insurance company.
- Report Scams. In the unfortunate event that you get scammed or know of someone that has, report these things to help others avoid getting scammed in the future.
